Hello Nature Nerds! Nerds for Nature began as an idea between friends in 2012. We launched to an enthusiastic crowd of over 100 in early 2013. Now, five years later, it’s time for the next chapter of Nerds for Nature to begin. Big news: the current leadership team is stepping aside. We’ve poured our hearts and energies into making Nerds work for people of all ages, with partners including California State Parks, the US Forest Service, and the California Academy of Sciences, and we’ve even gotten some publicity along the way (everywhere ). But like all organizations, fresh ideas and new bodies are needed after a while.
Now is that time for Nerds for Nature. We need new leadership. Could it be you? We’re excited to see what the next version of Nerds for Nature will accomplish. Given the new political climate, we think there’s a wide variety of opportunities to connect people with data and science. The co-organizers will still be around to help.
If we don’t find new leaders, we’ll have to sunset Nerds for Nature. While we’ll end on a high note, we’d rather the Nerds continue to connect people of all backgrounds to interesting projects involving science, journalism, mapping, design, and environmentalism.

Thanks to everyone who came, listened, shared, and contributed to the Mind Map! (And thanks to Ed Brownson for taking photos!) What’s next? We’re working on turning the Mind Map results into a focused survey and a great new set of programs for the coming year.

Two years ago, Nerds for Nature launched to a sold-out crowd.
As an organization we had a simple idea: what happens when you bring together curious, enthusiastic nature-loving people from all nerdy disciplines: science, technology, mapping, advocacy, teaching, journalism, design, and more? I two years ago that the launch was chaotic, inspiring, and a celebration. It was also a confirmation that there is a strong interest in using our collective ingenuity to address the environmental challenges around us. Above: Some of the crowd from our launch. At our launch, we didn’t tell people what Nerds for Nature was going to be.
We asked them. We decided early on that Nerds wouldn’t be a top-down organization.
Rather, we exist as a reflection of the community. What people want to learn, do, make, and share– we help facilitate and amplify. At the launch we asked everyone in the crowd to answer three questions: 1) What skills do you have to share?; 2) What do you want to learn?; and 3) What projects do you want to see happen?
